The thirty days of fasting during Ramzans for me are days of detox and tame-your-body-and-control-your-desires time of the year, they also help me lose weight and correct my eating habits. But what I have also noticed is that most people binge as soon as the fast is over because their body craves for food. But does that harm the body or is healthy? Let’s find out…

Fasting can be great jumpstart toward restoring good health if done correctly. Fasting is also referred to as detox or cleansing, while fasting once in a while is a great idea to help your digestive system function more efficiently, it also is very tough on the energy systems of the body and if not taken care of in the right way, can have serious detrimental effects on the working of the body.

When you are fasting the body is deprived of its nutrients, vitamins and proteins the food provides. The bodyr then starts using the glycogen in the muscles to carry out its function, which is later replaced by body fats, ultimately aiding in weight loss. Fasting also lowers ones metabolism.


Positive Effects of fasting on the body

  • Temporary weight loss which might return once you are back on normal diet.
  • Improves heart health
  • Studies show fasting can also improve rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Helps in maintaining normal blood sugar levels.

Negative Effects of fasting on the body

  • Dizziness
  • Tiredness
  • Acute headaches
  • Bad breath
  • Can affect the immune system, that is the body’s capacity to fight against diseases.

When fasting remember...

  • A day prior to the fast, make sure you are well hydrated.
  • A night before the fast, have a good meal with a good amount of carbohydrates as carbohydrates are energy givers and are stored in a concentrated form of glucose to give sustained energy ahead.
  • Avoid drinking  tea or any acid producing foods before the fast.
  • Avoid over eating after you end the fast.
  • Consult a doctor if you are suffering from diabetes, heart diseases, lung problems, liver problems, kidney problems.
