8 Hair Care Blunders You're Probably Making

haircare

We all want to have soft, shiny, and gorgeous looking hair, but do we sabotage our own efforts with major hair care blunders?

Here are some serious hair crimes that we're all guilty of, and some tips and tricks to help you do things the right way.

Styling your hair with heat often
Do you frequently use a hair dryer, a flat iron, or a curling iron? All these hot tools can cause irreversible heat damage to your hair, and eventually you'll have no option other than chopping off your tresses and waiting for them to grow back. If you must use heat to dry or style your hair, make sure you use heat-protection products to protect your hair from damage.

Using hairspray before styling
Have you ever heard a crackling sound when you were curling or straightening hair that has hairspray applied to it? The alcohols present in hairspray burn up on contact with heat. Make sure you use hairspray only AFTER curling or ironing your hair.

Using hot irons on damp hair
Wet hair and hot tools are a lethal combination. Curling and flat irons can cause the follicles of damp hair strands to burn, which results in weak and damaged tresses. Your hair should be completely dry before you style it with hot tools. Make sure you dry your hair before styling it, even if you're in a rush.

Sleeping with your hair wet
This results in a lot of friction. When you sleep and move about, there is a lot of frizz at the back of the head. Make sure you dry your hair before you sleep. You might feel too lazy to dry your hair at night, but it's better to do it or it'll end up with more work for you in the morning. Getting the frizz out will take you twice as long.

Washing your hair too often
Being a clean freak is not really a bad thing, but it is a common misconception that hair needs to be cleansed every day. When you wash your hair every day, you strip it of the essential oils that it needs to remain healthy. If your unwashed hair is bothering you too much, try some dry shampoo.

Skipping conditioner
It's important to use conditioner every time you wash your hair. Skipping conditioning can make your hair dull, dry and likely to get tangled. For frizzy hair, it's best to use a rinse-out and a leave-on conditioner.

Brushing when wet
Never, ever use a hairbrush on wet hair. Instead, opt for a wide-toothed comb, which does not damage your hair like a brush can. It's best to wait till your hair is completely dry before you brush it to prevent breakage. Start combing at the bottom, and work your way up, and don't tug at tangles.

Forceful towel drying
Most styling products recommend that you use them on towel-dried hair, but drying hair too intensely with a towel will roughen up the cuticle, resulting in dullness, frizz, and damage. Blot your hair with a towel and let it air dry naturally. It will take longer, but your hair will be healthier in the long run.
